PROJECT TITLE ENABLING THE FUTURE OF GREAT LAKES BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE ASSESSMENTPROJECT PERIOD 9 1 2022 8 31 2023THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE PROPOSED USGS MTU MTRI COLLABORATION IS TO RESEARCH NEW AND EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT TOOLS THAT IMPROVE THE SPATIAL COVERAGE, ACCURACY, PRECISION, AND USEFULNESS OF USGS S GREAT LAKES SCIENCE PROGRAM THREE SPECIFIC TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL UNDERWATER AND SURFACE AUTONOMY, UNDERWATER IMAGING, AND MACHINE LEARNING THESE INNOVATIONS COMBINED WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE THAT IS USEFUL TO GREAT LAKES NATIONAL RESOURCE MANAGERS THESE INNOVATIONS WILL ENABLE USGS TO COLLECT AND PROCESS LAKE WIDE SURVEYS OF PREY FISH ABUNDANCES, ANSWERING DISCRETE RESEARCH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FISH, LIMNOLOGY, AND ECOSYSTEMS MAP HABITATS AND DEVELOP MORE EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS TO PERSISTENT SAMPLING PROBLEMS TO AID IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THIS GOAL, MICHIGAN TECH WILL WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH USGS SCIENTISTS ON THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES ENGINEER, COORDINATE, AND DEPLOY ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGIES TO AUTONOMOUSLY COLLECT DATA ABOUT FISHERIES AND LAKE ECOSYSTEMS ASSIST WITH THE DELIVERY OF ANNUAL SURVEY RESULTS FOR BENTHIC FISHES FROM USGS S AUV IMAGERY DEVELOP AUTOMATED SOLUTIONS FOR INTERPRETATION AND PROCESSING OF BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL FEATURES IN UNDERWATER IMAGERY, VIDEO, AND ACOUSTIC DATA ADVANCE TECHNIQUES FOR LARGE SCALE UNDERWATER MAPPING OF PHYSICAL HABITAT AND GEOMORPHOLOGY USING ACOUSTIC TECHNOLOGIES AUTOMATE THE INTERPRETATION OF SATELLITE AND AERIAL REMOTE SENSING DATA FOR PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL FEATURES OF THE LAKE ENVIRONMENT DEVELOP COMPUTATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES, WORKFLOWS, AND SOFTWARE TO ACCELERATE DATA PROCESSING, ANALYSIS, AND DELIVERY TO PARTNERS ASSIST WITH PRODUCTION OF OPEN SOURCE TOOLS AND DATA THAT CAN BE EASILY ASSIMILATED BY THE PUBLIC AND USGS S PARTNERS THE DELIVERABLES AND OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE CUSTOM SOFTWARE FOR ROUND GOBY OBJECT IDENTIFICATION CUSTOM SOFTWARE FOR SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION PERCENT COVER ESTIMATION CUSTOM SOFTWARE FOR DREISSENID MUSSEL COVER AND COUNT PEER REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS ON RESEARCH RESULTS MULTIBEAM BATHYMETRY, BACKSCATTER, AND DERIVED PRODUCTS FOR GEOGRAPHIES OF INTEREST ANNOTATED IMAGE DATA SETS LABELLED FOR FISH, ALGAE, AND MUSSELS PUBLICLY RELEASED DATA SETS USED IN ANALYSES AND REPORTS ON RESEARCH OUTCOMES THE INTENDED BENEFICIARIES OF THIS WORK INCLUDE USGS STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING NATURAL RESOURCE AND LAND MANAGERS IN THE GREAT LAKES MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY MTU AND MICHIGAN TECH RESEARCH INSTITUTE MTRI HAVE BEEN ASSISTING THE USGS IN THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF ASSISTING NATURAL RESOURCE AND LAND MANAGERS BY PROVIDING THEM WITH SOUND BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE IN APPLYING THE INFORMATION TO THEIR NEEDS

NAME OF STATE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: NEVADA BUREAU OF MINES AND GEOLOGYPROPOSAL TITLE: NEVADA BUREAU OF MINES AND GEOLOGY 2025 STATEMAP PROPOSALPROJECT PERIOD: 09 18 2025 09 17 2027PURPOSE: THE NEVADA BUREAU OF MINES AND GEOLOGY (NBMG) STATEMAP 2025 AWARD WILLSUPPORT GEOLOGIC MAPPING ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE STATE OF NEVADA AS WELL AS THE PREPARATION OFGEOLOGIC MAP PUBLICATIONS AND DATA SETS FOR PUBLIC RELEASE. MUCH OF THIS AWARD WILL FUND SALARIESFOR NBMG PERSONNEL FOCUSED ON GEOLOGIC MAPPING PROJECTS INCLUDING FIELD GEOLOGISTS, GISANALYSTS CARTOGRAPHERS, AND PROJECT MANAGERS. THE AWARD WILL ALSO SUPPORT TRAVEL EXPENSES FORFIELD WORK AND LABORATORY ANALYSES TO UNDERSTAND THE GEOLOGIC CONTEXT OF MAP UNITS.ACTIVITIES: DETAILED GEOLOGIC MAPPING OF BEDROCK AND SURFICIAL MATERIALS WILL BE DONE IN THE FIELDUSING GPS-ENABLED TABLET COMPUTERS, HAND-HELD GPS, AND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. DIGITAL FIELDMAPPING AND OFFICE DIGITIZATION WILL USE THE BEST AVAILABLE BASE DATA, INCLUDING HIGH-RESOLUTIONSATELLITE IMAGERY AND LIDAR WHERE AVAILABLE. BEDROCK MAPPING IN AREAS WITH A WELL CONSTRAINEDSTRATIGRAPHIC FRAMEWORK WILL FOCUS ON DISTINGUISHING GEOLOGIC UNITS THAT ARE CONSISTENT AND EASILYCORRELATED WITH ADJACENT MAP AREAS. IN AREAS WITH POOR STRATIGRAPHIC CONTROL OR LOCALLY DISTINCTGEOLOGY, THE BEDROCK UNITS WILL BE SUBDIVIDED IN SUCH A WAY TO BEST CAPTURE THE DEPOSITIONAL ANDINTRUSIVE HISTORY OF THE AREA AND CONSTRAIN THE TIMING AND MAGNITUDE OF TECTONIC DEFORMATION.QUATERNARY MAPPING WILL SUBDIVIDE SURFICIAL UNITS BASED ON DEPOSIT TYPE AND RELATIVE AGEDETERMINED THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF SOIL PROFILES, GEOMORPHOLOGY, AND AGE DATING. MOST MAPAREAS IN NEVADA CONTAIN QUATERNARY FAULT TRACES, AND MAPPING WILL EMPHASIZE THE DIVISION OFDISPLACED SURFICIAL DEPOSITS INTO RELATIVE AGE UNITS THAT DOCUMENT THE RECENCY OF FAULTING, AIDINGSEISMIC HAZARD ANALYSES. THE STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF EACH MAP AREA WILL BE DOCUMENTED WITHDETAILED MAPPING OF DEFORMATION STRUCTURES (I.E., FAULTS, FOLDS, AND SHEAR ZONES) AND FIELDMEASUREMENT OF BEDDING, FOLIATIONS, AND LINEATIONS. DURING MAPPING, SAMPLES OF BEDROCK WILL BECOLLECTED AS NECESSARY FOR PETROGRAPHIC, GEOCHEMICAL, AND GEOCHRONOLOGIC ANALYSES.IN THE OFFICE, FIELD OBSERVATIONS WILL BE ENTERED INTO AN GIS SOFTWARE USING THE USGS GEMSSCHEMA. ONCE THE GEOLOGIC MAP IS COMPLETE, ONE OR MORE TOPOGRAPHIC PROFILES ARE DIGITALLYGENERATED, AND GEOLOGIC CROSS-SECTIONS ARE CONSTRUCTED. THE FINAL STEPS OF THE MAP PRODUCTIONINCLUDE MATCHING COLORS FOR FORMAL MAP UNITS, SELECTING VISUALLY OPTIMAL COLORS FOR INFORMALSTRATIGRAPHIC UNITS, MERGING POLYGONS WITH DEM HILLSHADES, AND CARTOGRAPHIC REFINEMENT OF THEOVERALL MAP LAYOUT. ALL MAPS UNDERGO A CARTOGRAPHIC REVIEW AND A GEOLOGIC REVIEW PRIOR TOPUBLICATION. MAP PUBLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC DOWNLOAD AT THE NBMG WEBSITE.DELIVERABLES AND OUTCOMES: THE NBMG STATEMAP 2025 AWARD WILL SUPPORT THE PUBLICATION OFNINE 1:24,000 SCALE 7.5 QUADRANGLE GEOLOGIC MAPS AND ONE 1:24,000 SCALE RANGE AREA GEOLOGIC MAP. THELONG-RANGE GEOLOGIC MAPPING PLAN OF THE NEVADA BUREAU OF MINES AND GEOLOGY (NBMG) HAS TWO MAJORGOALS: 1. TO FACILITATE THE GROWTH OF NEVADAS URBAN CENTERS AND STATEWIDE INFRASTRUCTURE BY PROVIDINGINFORMATION ON GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS, RESOURCES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND, 2.
