PROJECT TITLE: PRESERVING AND INVENTORYING KANSAS GEOLOGIC DATA, DOCUMENTS, SAMPLES, AND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND SURVEYING DRILL HOLE CORE HOLDINGS RELATING TO CRITICAL MINERAL RESOURCES, FY2023PROJECT PERIOD: 8 18 2023 THROUGH 8 17 2026PRIORITY 1 PRESERVE GEOSCIENCE DATA AND MATERIALTHE KANSAS GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (KGS), THE STATE REPOSITORY FOR GEOLOGIC RECORDS, HAS A LONG HISTORY OF PROVIDING GEOLOGIC RECORDS TO THE PUBLIC FOR LITTLE OR NO COST. THIS YEARS PROJECTS CONSIST OF THREE PRESERVATION PROJECTS THAT CONTINUE WORK PREVIOUSLY FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL DATA PRESERVATION PROGRAM. THE INTENDED BENEFICIARIES INCLUDE INDEPENDENT GEOLOGISTS, ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANTS, INDUSTRY OPERATORS AND DRILLERS, DATA VENDORS, INVESTORS, LAWYERS, PRIVATE LANDOWNERS, STATE REGIONAL LOCAL TRIBAL AGENCIES, AND ACADEMIA. THE GEOLOGIC DATA IS USED IN PLANNING PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE, IDENTIFYING METHANE GAS LEAKS, LOCATING CRITICAL MINERALS, AND CORRELATING THE STATES STRATIGRAPHY. REGULATORY AGENCIES AND ENVIRONMENTAL FIRMS USE OUR DATA IN THEIR RESEARCH. ADDITIONALLY, THE KGS CREATES ENTRIES IN THEIR DATABASE WHERE NO RECORDS EXIST AIDING WITH IDENTIFYING WELL CUTTINGS AND CORE IN THEIR REPOSITORIES WHICH BENEFIT STAKEHOLDERS AND HELPS PROTECT OUR NATURAL RESOURCES.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED PRIORITY 1: THE KGS HAS THREE PRESERVATION PROJECTS FOR FY23. IN PROJECT 1, THE KGS STAFF, WITH STUDENT ASSISTANCE, WILL SCAN 10,000 OIL AND GAS WELL COMPLETION AND DRILLERS REPORTS, WIRELINE AND STRIP LOGS, AND OTHER GEOLOGICAL REPORTS AND MAKE THEM AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE. THE STAFF WILL ALSO ORGANIZE AND INVENTORY ADDITIONAL RECORDS. THE KANSAS STATUTE MANDATES THAT THE KANSAS GEOLOGIC SAMPLE REPOSITORY (KGSR) COLLECTS, PRESERVES, AND SUPPLIES PUBLIC ACCESS TO OIL AND GAS WELL SAMPLES THEREFORE, FOR PROJECT 2, THE KGSR STAFF PLAN TO PROCESS 9,000 WELL CUTTING SAMPLES. IN THE FINAL PRESERVATION PROJECT, PROJECT 3, STUDENTS WILL SCAN 25,000 IMAGES TO OUR WORK-IN PROGRESS DATABASE OF 45,000 HISTORICAL AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. THESE SCANS WILL BE CONVERTED TO PDFS AND JPGS AND WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC TO VIEW AND DOWNLOAD.PRIORITY 2 DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTTHIS INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING REQUEST WILL ALLOW THE KGS COMPUTER SERVICES STAFF TO MODIFY THEIR DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE PRESERVATION AND DATA RETRIEVAL FOR THE PUBLIC. THIS ADDRESSES QUARTZ SAND CRITICAL MINERAL NEEDS FOR RESILIENCE RANGING FROM BEACH-COMPATIBLE RESOURCES AFTER TROPICAL SYSTEM LANDFALLS IN FLORIDA TO CONSTRUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE FLORIDA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WILL UPDATE GEOLOGIC BOREHOLE LITHOLOGIC DESCRIPTION DATA AND FORMATION PICKS INFORMATION STATEWIDE. TASKS INCLUDE REVIEW OF BOREHOLE DESCRIPTIONS AND ENSURE DATA MEET OUR CURRENT GEOLOGIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE STATEWIDE SHALLOW STRATIGRAPHY. PURPOSE
GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND RESEARCH BY THE NEW MEXICO STATEMAP PROGRAM ADDRESSES SOME OF
THE TOP NEEDS OF THE STATE, PRIMARILY ACCESS TO WATER RESOURCES, CHARACTERIZING ENERGY AND MINERAL
RESOURCES, AND ASSESSING GEOLOGIC HAZARDS. GEOLOGIC MAPS PROVIDE CRUCIAL DATA FOR BUSINESSES,
PRIVATE CITIZENS, TRIBAL LEADERS, AND STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO MAKE INFORMED
DECISIONS. THE 2025-2027 STATEMAP AWARD TO THE NEW MEXICO BUREAU OF GEOLOGY AND
MINERAL RESOURCES CONTINUES MAPPING THREE LONG-TERM FOCUS AREAS?THE RIO GRANDE WATERSHED,
THE PECOS RIVER WATERSHED, AND THE SAN JUAN BASIN. THESE REGIONS HOST THE MAJORITY OF THE STATE?S
INFRASTRUCTURE, ARE SITES OF SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, HAVE POTENTIAL CRITICAL MINERAL

SUPPORTED ACTIVITIES AS PART OF THIS AWARD INCLUDE NEW GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND MULTIPLE PROJECTS TO
SUPPORT THE USGI. NEW GEOLOGIC MAPPING OF SEVEN 7.5-MINUTE QUADRANGLES AND TWO 7.5X15-

DEVELOPMENT OF TWO SUBSURFACE MAPS IN THE RIO GRANDE RIFT, (2) A STRATIGRAPHIC UPDATE FOR THE
NORTHERN SAN JUAN BASIN, (3) DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDUCED SEISMICITY MAP OF SOUTHEASTERN NM,
COMPILATION OF GEOCHRONOLOGY DATA FOR THE USGS GEOCHRON DATABASE, (5) PUBLICATION OF A NM
STATEMAP FACT SHEET, (6) GEMS LEVEL 3 DATABASE FOR THE NEWLY MAPPED QUADRANGLES, AND (7)
CONVERSION OF SEVEN LEGACY MAPS TO GEMS LEVEL 3 DATABASES.
DELIVERABLES, OUTCOMES, AND INTENDED BENEFICIARIES
THE SAN JUAN BASIN PROJECTS INCLUDE NEW, 1:24K-SCALE GEOLOGIC MAPPING (THREE 7.5-MIN QUADS;
ONE 7.5X15-MIN QUAD) AND AN UPDATE FOR THE EARLY CENOZOIC STRATIGRAPHY. THIS WORK WILL SUPPORT
REGIONAL ENERGY AND AGGREGATE EXPLORATION AND CHARACTERIZATION FOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS AND
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. THE STRATIGRAPHIC UPDATE WILL SUPPORT A FUTURE COLLABORATION WITH THE COLORADO
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY THAT WILL LIKELY AFFECT GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION. NEW 1:24K-SCALE MAPPING IN
THE RIO GRANDE WATERSHED (FOUR 7.5-MINUTE QUADS; ONE 7.5X15-MINUTE QUAD) PRIMARILY SUPPORTS
WATER RESOURCE STUDIES, CRITICAL MINERAL EXPLORATION, AND HAZARDS RELATED TO SIGNIFICANT RIFT-RELATED
FAULTS. THE TULAROSA AND SAN LUIS BASIN SUBSURFACE PROJECTS WILL SUPPORT ONGOING GROUNDWATER
CHARACTERIZATION OF THESE REGIONS, WHICH WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO SMALL COMMUNITIES (E.G., TAOS,
ALAMOGORDO) IN THOSE AREAS. IN SOUTHEASTERN NM, AN INDUCED SEISMICITY MAP WITH AN UPDATED
EVENT CATALOG WILL PROVIDE ACCURATE AND COMPREHENSIVE EARTHQUAKE LOCATION INFORMATION
NECESSARY FOR OIL PRODUCERS AND WATER MANAGERS IN A CRITICAL ECONOMIC REGION OF THE STATE.
UPDATING LEGACY MAPS TO MODERN STANDARDS, PROVIDING A GEMS DATABASE OF NEW MAPS, COMPILING
GEOCHRONOLOGY DATA, AND PUBLISHING A NM STATEMAP FACT SHEET SUPPORT THE MISSION OF THE
NATIONAL COOPERATIVE GEOLOGIC MAPPING PROGRAM AND USGS PRIORITIES. MAP PRODUCTS ARE

PROJECT 1 COMPRISES TWO SUBPROJECTS: THE BEDROCK GEOLOGY OF THE ELIZABETH AND SCALES MOUND WEST QUADRANGLES, JO DAVIESS COUNTY, NORTHWESTERN ILLINOIS, AND THE BEDROCK GEOLOGY OF THE MONTPELIER AND ILLINOIS CITY QUADRANGLES, ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, WESTERN ILLINOIS. THE MAPPING FOCUSES ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL MINERALS, ESPECIALLY LEAD-ZINC AND PHOSPHORITE DEPOSITS WHICH ARE SOURCES OF CRITICAL MINERALS FOR WHICH THERE IS HIGH DEMAND IN ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING. A 300-FOOT-DEEP DRILL HOLE WILL TARGET THE LOWER PENNSYLVANIAN ROCKS TO UPDATE THE PENNSYLVANIAN STRATIGRAPHY AND SEDIMENTOLOGY BETWEEN ILLINOIS AND IOWA. PROJECT 2 PROPOSES THE START OF A 5-YEAR PLAN FOR THE GREATER CHICAGO REGION TO CREATE A 3D MODEL FRAMEWORK OF SUPERFICIAL AND SHALLOW BEDROCK GEOLOGY. YEAR 1 WILL INVOLVE COMPILING AN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY DATABASE AND UPPER BEDROCK SURFACES OF COOK AND DUPAGE COUNTIES. IN PROJECT 3, BEDROCK GEOLOGY OF JACKSON AND RANDOLPH COUNTIES, SOUTHWESTERN ILLINOIS, WILL BE DIGITALLY COMPILED FROM 24 PREVIOUSLY MAPPED QUADRANGLES. THE QUADRANGLES, MAPPED BY SEVERAL DIFFERENT GEOLOGISTS OVER 3 DECADES, WILL BE HARMONIZED AND EDGE-MATCHED BY REVISITING KEY FIELD OUTCROPS. UNDERSTANDING OF THE EXTINCTION EVENT WITHIN THE MISSISSIPPIAN MENARD FORMATION WHERE THE LAST KNOWN OCCURRENCE OF THE NAUTILOID ENDOLOBUS SPECTABILIS WILL BE TRACED BY CHEMOSTRATIGRAPHY. PROJECT 4 COMPRISES TWO SUBPROJECTS: THE PHASE 4 COMPILATION OF THE ILLINOIS STATEWIDE SURFICIAL COUNTY MAPS AND GEMS UPDATES OF PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED COUNTY SURFICIAL GEOLOGY MAPS OF MADISON AND ST. CLAIR COUNTIES. THE PROPOSED PHASE 4 WILL EXTEND MAPPING INTO NORTHWESTERN ILLINOIS AND WILL ADDRESS QUATERNARY STATE-BORDER MAPPING INTO AN AREA WITH COMPLEX SURFICIAL GEOLOGY AND UNCERTAIN CORRELATIONS FOR ILLINOIS EPISODE GLACIAL TILL UNITS. THESE QUATERNARY MAP COMPILATIONS IN THE PHASE 4 AREA WERE THE CULMINATION OF SEVERAL YEARS OF DETAILED 1:24,000 QUADRANGLE MAPPING. HOWEVER, GEMS STANDARDS HAVE NOT BEEN APPLIED TO THESE DETAILED COUNTY COMPILATIONS. ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TOMOGRAPHY WILL BE USED TO HELP TO DELINEATE POSSIBLE DISCONTINUOUS ESKERS OR MORAINES IN AREAS OF LIMITED PRIOR MAPPING. QUATERNARY GEOLOGY MAPS OF MADISON AND ST. CLAIR COUNTIES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO UNDERSTAND IMPORTANT SOCIETAL ISSUES THAT INCLUDE SEISMIC HAZARDS, SAND AND GRAVEL RESOURCES, COAL-MINE SUBSIDENCE, AND GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION POTENTIAL. PROJECT 5 PROPOSES A GEOPHYSICAL IMAGING SURVEY TO MAP A STRUCTURALLY COMPLEX DEEP AQUIFER SYSTEM IN NORTH-CENTRAL ILLINOIS TO DETERMINE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF A DEEP AQUIFER SYSTEM IN THE PRESENCE OF SANDWICH FAULT ZONE. THE GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY WILL CONSIST OF HIGH RESOLUTION ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SOURCE SEISMIC IMAGING AS WELL AS TIME DOMAIN ELECTROMAGNETIC METHOD. SIX OF THE 7 MAPS DESCRIBED ABOVE WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY AS PDFS AND IN GEMS LEVEL 3-COMPLIANT DATABASES. IN ADDITION, THE PREVIOUSLY 26 PUBLISHED MAPS FROM PROJECTS 1, 3 AND 4 WILL BE DELIVERED AS GEMS LEVEL 3-COMPLIANT DATABASES. THE STATEWIDE SURFICIAL GEOLOGY WILL BE A PROGRESS REPORT FOR PHASE 4 INCLUDING GEMS LEVEL 3 IMPLEMENTATION. PROJECT 4 WILL DELIVER A FINAL REPORT WITH DESCRIBING SEISMIC DATA INTERPRETATION AND RAW AND PROCESSED SEISMIC DATA FILES. THE DELIVERABLES WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM THE ILLINOIS STATE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WEBSITE SOON AFTER DELIVERY, SUBMITTED TO THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY NATIONAL GEOLOGIC MAP DATABASE, AND WILL BE PUBLISHED WITHIN THE ENSUING YEAR.

ADDITIONALLY, A STUDENT THESIS (WOOLACE, 2005) RESEARCHED THE QUATERNARY STRATIGRAPHY AND TECTONIC EVOLUTION OF LITTLE LAKE VALLEY THAT WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE DATA AND INSIGHT FOR THIS STATEMAP PRODUCT.ACTIVITIES:CGS GEOLOGISTS WILL BEGIN WITH THE ACQUISITION AND EVALUATION OF EXISTING PUBLISHED AND UNPUBLISHEDGEOLOGIC MAPS AND REPORTS, INCLUDING LANDSLIDE MAPPING FROM TIMBER HARVEST REPORTS, RECENTLY COMPLETEDSTATEMAP PROJECTS WITHIN THE UKIAH 30 X 60 QUADRANGLE, AND FRAMEWORK STUDIES OF THE REGION BY THEUSGS.
